Look familiar? The BlackBerry Bold 9700 now resembles existing BlackBerrys.

Almost exactly one year ago, Research In Motion introduced what I then called the Buick of BlackBerrys: the BlackBerry Bold. It was bulky, heavy and seemed made for the holster-wearing set. But what it lacked in style it made up for in comfort. It had a generously sized keyboard, bright screen and even a leatherette back to accent its luxurious side. The Bold was RIM's first BlackBerry to run on the fast 3G network, and AT&T was asking $300 for it—$100 more than the least expensive Apple iPhone at the time.

Much has changed in a year, most notably the growing number of serious competitors vying to steal customers from RIM and Apple, and the surge of applications ("apps" for short) available for these super smart phones.

When it was launched a year ago, the Blackberry Bold was big on features but short on style. WSJ's Katie Boehret says the newer model is sleeker and more compact, while retaining many of the same features.

This week, I tested RIM's new BlackBerry Bold 9700 (na.blackberry.com), which will be available on Nov. 27 for $200 with a two-year T-Mobile contract. Like the original Bold, the Bold 9700 has a leatherette back. But that's where the similarities end. This new version reminds me of the original Bold after a diet: smaller in every dimension—width, height, depth and weight—and, physically, it's a lot like the newer BlackBerry Curve models. (I use the Curve 8900 every day, and after using the two together for a week I still mistook them for one another at a glance.)

RIM has long been proud of its diverse selection and the fact that it doesn't force a "one size fits all" theory on its users. Instead, it offers BlackBerrys in all shapes and sizes, ranging from the Pearl Flip, a flip phone with a built-in BlackBerry, to the Storm 2, a touch-screen device without a physical keyboard, and several models in between.

Now, the Bold has dropped its distinguished characteristics. The Buick of BlackBerrys has become as common as the Toyota Camry. Is there nothing left for the user who likes a large, luxurious BlackBerry?

In a side-by-side comparison between this new Bold 9700, the Curve 8900 ($150 after a $100 mail-in rebate) and the Tour 9630 ($150 after Verizon's $100 online discount), the physical differences are almost imperceptible. And these models don't look all that different from the Curve 8520, which costs $50 with a two-year T-Mobile contract when bought at Wal-Mart.

The new Bold's smaller size means its keyboard also is slightly smaller than its predecessor: It measures about 5.5 centimeters across rather than 5.9 centimeters. I still found it relatively comfortable to use. But this keyboard is almost exactly the same as the keyboard on the BlackBerry Tour, except the new Bold's bottom row of keys is slightly shorter. Unlike the keyboard found on the Curve 8900 and other less-expensive Curves, the keys on the Bold 9700 are positioned side by side with no spaces between them, and horizontal rows are divided by chrome frets.

While the Bold 9700 looks rather undistinguished, it has a few less-obvious attributes that give it a little oomph. For starters, it uses a trackpad for scrolling the screen. Longtime Blackberry users will remember the original scroll wheel, which was on the right side of the device. In 2006, the scroll wheel was replaced with a trackball on the front of the device. This September, that trackball was replaced by a trackpad as first seen on the Curve 8520, and its appearance on this new Bold confirms RIM's decision to use it as the navigational tool of choice.

This trackpad is a tiny, touch-sensitive square that works by sensing a finger's directional movements. Pressing in on the trackpad, like pressing in on the trackball, selects something on the screen. At first, I missed the satisfying physical feel of scrolling with the trackball, and the trackpad felt fast and less controllable to my thumb. But I soon got used to the trackpad and appreciated that it does away with all moving parts that could possibly get stuck—a trackball hazard for many BlackBerry users. The trackpad also establishes a flat layer beneath the screen that looks sleek and smooth in line with the four navigational buttons.

Another advantage of the Bold 9700 is its battery life. If you take off this BlackBerry's leatherette back, a battery that measures almost the size of the device itself lies beneath. This large battery supplies the Bold 9700 with enough juice to last up to 19 days in standby mode. By comparison, the BlackBerry Tour and Curve 8900 last for up to 14 days each in standby. The new Bold's talk time is up to six hours, slightly better than the Curve 8900's 5½ and an hour better than the Tour's five-hour talk time.

This thinner, lighter, smaller Bold is more comfortable to use for phone calls than the original, which could make users feel like they were holding a small piece of toast up to their ear during calls. I made several calls with no problems. Emailing on this Bold 9700 was as simple as always, and I set up four email accounts for testing.

Despite its fancy new BlackBerrys, RIM needs to overhaul the way it handles apps. The Bold 9700 comes preloaded with a prominently positioned icon for RIM's BlackBerry App World store. But apps downloaded from here still go right into the "Downloads" folder, sending users unfamiliar with this system into a frantic search for their newly downloaded app.

And not all apps go into that folder; the Facebook app goes straight to the "Apps" folder. Why not put every new app right on the home screen and let me put them into folders if I so choose?

Once apps are downloaded, RIM neglects to notify you when all apps need to be updated. On my personal Curve 8900, I recently dug into the settings of my TwitterBerry and Facebook apps and manually checked to see if updated versions were available for each. This was the case, and I downloaded the new versions, but most people would never think to check for this kind of thing. Instead, RIM should send notifications about available updates for all apps.

The Bold 9700 runs on T-Mobile's 3G network, which isn't nearly as established as the 3G networks that Verizon and AT&T offer. It also can connect to Wi-Fi and allows voice calls to be made over Wi-Fi. (The BlackBerry Tour connects to Verizon's 3G network but doesn't have Wi-Fi—a huge downside. The Curve 8900 connects to Wi-Fi but not to 3G.)

The other attributes of the Bold 9700 are like the BlackBerry Curve 8900 and Tour: They all have cameras with flashes that are capable of capturing 3.2-megapixel photographs, bright 480x360-pixel displays, built-in GPS and slots for microSD memory cards so as to expand their memory.

If you're considering a BlackBerry upgrade, the Bold 9700 offers 3G and Wi-Fi, a combination not offered by another BlackBerry with a full physical keyboard—other than the original Bold. But since many of the Bold 9700's features are about the same as less-expensive BlackBerrys, it's worth considering the Tour and Curve 8900 before you spend $200 on a device that no longer lives up to its bold name.

NEW YORK – Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. on Tuesday agreed to buy Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp., making a $34 billion bet on the future of the U.S. economy.

Burlington Northern, the nation's second-largest railroad, is the biggest hauler of food products like corn and coal for electricity, making it an indicator of the country's economic health. The railroad also ships a large amount of goods from Western ports including everyday items such as refrigerators, clothing and TVs.

Analysts say Buffett is planting both feet in an industry that is poised to grow as the economy gets back on solid ground. If approved, it would be the biggest acquisition ever for Berkshire Hathaway Inc.

Berkshire Hathaway already owns about 22 percent of Burlington Northern, and said it will pay $100 a share in cash and stock for the rest of the company, a 31.5 percent premium on Burlington Northern's Monday closing price. Shareholders have the option to convert their stock for a cash payment of $100 per share or receive Berkshire Class A or Class B common stock. Up to 60 percent of the deal is cash and 40 percent is in stock.

"Berkshire's $34 billion investment in BNSF is a huge bet on that company, CEO Matt Rose and his team, and the railroad industry," Buffett said in a statement.

"Most important of all, however, it's an all-in wager on the economic future of the United States. I love these bets," he said.

The majority of the stock in the deal will be Berkshire's "A" shares, but Berkshire's board also approved a 50-for-1 split of its Class B common stock for holders of smaller amounts of Burlington shares who opt for a share exchange rather than cash. Berkshire's Class B shares closed Monday at $3,265. With the split, each share will be worth $65.30. Burlington shares shot up $21.33, or 28 percent to $97.40 in morning trading. Shares of other major rails, including Burlington's larger rival Union Pacific Corp., rose as well.

Berkshire also owns stock in two other major U.S. railroads — 9.56 million shares of Union Pacific Corp. and 1.93 million shares of Norfolk Southern Corp., as of June 30.

The deal for Burlington Northern has been approved by the boards of both companies, but still needs two-thirds approval of Burlington's shareholders and antitrust clearance. The railroad expects to clear those hurdles in the first three months of next year.

Last week the railroad reported third-quarter profit dropped 30 percent to $488 million, or $1.42 per share, as consumers continued to hold back on buying retail goods and industrial production struggled.

Burlington was one of the least optimistic among major railroads about the pace of economic recovery. CEO Matt Rose said consumers are going to be the driver of any improvement in the economy, but no one is buying yet.

Analysts say Buffett is looking for an investment that will reap rewards for many years into the future, and isn't so concerned about immediate gains.

"(Buffett is) buying at the trough — things aren't going to get much worse. He's getting in at a good time," said Art Hatfield, an analyst with investment firm Morgan Keegan.

Hatfield said he believes Buffett went for Burlington Northern in part because of its good management team, an important aspect in any of the billionaire's deals.

Hatfield also said that Burlington Northern has been more progressive than its peers in developing new technology, allowing to be more profitable. Major railroads have been able to slash costs during the recession by cutting jobs, parking railcars and making strides to improve train speeds and other metrics that improved efficiency.

Well how has your NBA TEAM DONE AFTER THE FIRST TWO GAMES OF THE PLAYOFFS?
We have had a lot of blowout games. I don't care to watch games that are not exciting and boring. I can use my time better than that. With the entire top analyst picking the L.A. Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers to reach the NBA Finals do we really need to watch these games? Let's just save the fans money and go straight to the NBA Finals. Not!!! The NBA is way too smart to do this? There is too much money to be made with the rest of the games (series) on the road to the NBA Finals. We all knew last year that Boston was the team to beat for the crown. This year we have a little more options. The NBA marketing machine is promoting to the fans appetite for Lakers versus Cavaliers. Kobe Bryant versus Lebron James.

Here is one blowout game for example the Atlanta Hawks versus the Miami Heat game one on Sunday night. The Heat left their game in South Beach on Sunday Night. The story from the Heat camp was that their 2 captains forbid players to go out and sample the nightlife in Atlanta while there for the first two playoff games. D-Wade had a subpar game himself only scoring 19 points. Let's give Atlanta credit for the defense game plan they played to perfection on Sunday night.

I know Wade can play better than this. I got to see D Wade play against Orlando Magic in Feb where he dropped Fifty on Orlando for his then personal best scoring game. This was my first time seeing Dwayne Wade and Dwight Howard in person. Dwight Howard had thirty two points on that night as well.

It seems coincidental that Kevin Garnett is supposedly on the shelf for Boston the rest of the playoffs. Now Boston will have an excuse if they lose before reaching the NBA Finals or Eastern conference Finals. Let's think back to the beginning of the year all the talk was Lebron James is going to New York in 2010 to play for a bigger market team. Lebron does not have a strong enough supporting cast to help him win the NBA Title. I admit the talking about his free agency was stupid because Lebron had another whole year (season) to play. Oh what a difference a season makes for the Cleveland Cavaliers! I want you to think about all the records the Cavaliers have set this year. Best Record in the league(Home Court Advantage throughout the playoffs, Tied Best Home Record ever with the OLD Boston Celtics, Best ever SEASON RECORD FOR A Cavaliers Team,etc.(History in the Making) I have nothing against the Cavaliers. I glad that they have accomplished these feats! I want you to notice now in all the major sports that every time you turn around history is being made.
Now let's say for the sake of argument that Lebron James and Cleveland win the title this year. Does Lebron stay in Cleveland now that he has won a NBA Title? We will see. It should be interesting either way.

Accident on I-1O Claims Life of College Student

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Bethany Jean Murphy, 21, was killed Tuesday night in a crash on Interstate 10 at Baum Road.
Murphy was headed west in a 1998 Honda Civic at about 9:15 p.m. The car overturned after veering off the road onto the north shoulder. Murphy was ejected from the car and received fatal injuries as a result of the crash.
Murphy was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, according to the FHP crash report.
Alcohol was not a factor. Bethany was a student at Florida State University and a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority.

We are sad to hear that another young life is lost to an accident. We send condolences out to her family and friends. You never know when your life could end. If you have not been telling your loved ones you love them start now and mean it. Give them a hug also and a kiss on the cheek. Unfortunately this young lady want be able to do that anymore.

Actor Kal Penn joins White House team

WASHINGTON – The White House has hired actor Kal Penn as a liaison between President Barack Obama's administration and Asian constituents.

White House spokesman Shin Inouye said Tuesday that the actor who had a recurring role on Fox's TV show "House" and has starred in several movies would join the staff as an associate director in the Office of Public Liaison. His role will be to connect Obama with the Asian-American and Pacific Islander communities, as well as arts groups.

Penn starred as Kumar in the movie, "Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay." His "House" character committed suicide in Monday's episode.

Penn backed Obama during the campaign. The White House says a start date for Penn hasn't been set.

The hire was first reported by Entertainment Weekly.

The White house is trying to reach out to all ethnic Americans in the United States.
It will be interesting to see what role Kal Penn will have to play on the world stage in this adminisration.

Federer loses to Novak Djokovic in three sets at the Sony Ericsson Open today. When was the last time that World # 1 Nadal and Federer both lost at an event they both played in? The two men have dominated the events they played in the last two years. One or the other would win the tournament. I’ll have to research and see when actually the last time was and give you the correct answer. Nadal has started the year in great form winning two of the five tournaments he has played. (BNP Paribas Open, Australian Open) Nadal has reached three finals only losing one of them to Andy Murray. Federer has yet to win a title in the four tournaments he has played this year. Federer has reached three semi finals and the Australian Open Final. Is Federer in decline? I don’t think so but his confidence is shaken!
The improvement of Nadal’s game this year and Federer second straight lost to Nadal in Major Finals at the 2009 Australian Open has taken its toll on Federer mindset. The Wimbledon lost last year was devastating for Federer. Federer will bounce back but the clay season is fast approaching which Federer has been second best the last three years. Until the next tournament we shall wait and see what happens.

How are you handling the slowing economy?

Has a member of your family been affected by the slowing economy? If they have will you like to post a comment about it on Fire on I-10?

We at Fire on I-10 can feel the pain of so many Americans going through this tough time. We also know that this is not only affecting America but the World as a whole in some way or another. We can all be smarter in our decisions in the future about what is really important in life. Do you really need three cars or five TVs? Do you really need Cable TV with 300 channels that you never get to look at any way? Do you really need 30 pairs of shoes? When there are so many people around the world that don't have shoes, food or clothing. Let's stop waste millions if not billions of pounds of food here in America. Let's give away several pieces of clothing that we don't use or have not worn in a year to someone who is less fortunate. There are many places that will take your clothing. Examples Salvation Army, Goodwill or whatever organization in your area takes things for the less fortunate. Let’s give food to the food banks that desperately needs people to help support their drying up pantries. Ever little bit helps with many people pitching in to the cause.

So, let’s do a good deed today. It will make you feel better.

Just before entering the exit into the off ramp near Marianna, Fl

An beige and white RV vehicle with a black truck or jeep caught fire near the rear of the RV.
The smoke was a good quarter of a mile in thickness from the burning RV. We(drivers) had to slow down because of the thickness of the smoke.
While driving I noticed smoke ahead and saw pieces that had broken off the back of the RV
blowing in the wind through the I-10 road. I did not know at first what the pieces were from but the smell of smoke burning was visible before getting to the burning RV about a mile away. Upon come closer to the exit did we learn what the smoke was coming from. The passengers had appeared to get out of the vehicle safely. I could see a man and a woman standing on the side of the RV near the back looking on at their RV burning. My first instinct was to stop and help but I was trying to make it back to work. Some of the other drivers had stopped to help which was great.
I then preceded to call 911 BUT all circuits were busy. I eased along to try and find any help that I could while going on to work. I ran across a fire station not to far down Exit 136 going towards Marianna. I whipped my car around and hopped out once on the property of the fire station. I beat on the door of the fire station and went around to the fire station bay . I yelled truck on fire and the fireman informed me they had got the call. As they were finishing the last touches of getting their gear ready to fight the fire. I stood watching as they turned on the sirens and pulled out of the fire station bay. I pointed in the direction of the fire and they were off to go help save lives and property. I wanted to go back and see the fire fighters at work but reluctantly went on to driving back to work. I don't no the outcome of what happened but I will follow up on this story and post and update. I will try and talk to the fire fighters that responded to the call on this day. If the people whose RV unfortunately caught on fire every reads this blog please leave a comment for Fire on I-10.

As, Being a mobile journalist and blogger you are not all ways able to being the first one on the scene. This was a first for me but I wish nobody misfortune for me to get this privilege.
